The dying Child
by Andersen
Mother, I am weary, I will sleep,
Lull me near thy heart, my Mother dear!
Promise me that you no more will weep,
look! upon my forehead, burns thy tear
Tempest hurls without, within is cold
but my dreams show every thing so fair
beautiful little angels I behold
When my eyes are shut from pain and care!
#
Mother, see one of them at my side,
Dost thou hear the music as in heaven
lo, the feathered wings are snowy white
They are surely by ‘almighty’ given
Different colours with eachoters strive
which as flowers flutter for my eye
shall I gather whileI am alive,
Or perhaps, my mother, when I die?
#
Mother, weherefore dost thou press my hand?
wherefore dost thou lay thy cheek to mine?
Wet it is, yet bourning as a brand,
Mother, I for ever will by thine!
pray, cheer up thy heart and heare no sight,
If thou weep’st thy child will weep with thee
I am weary – I must shut my eyes -!
Mother! see –the angels kissing me!
